The City of Orangeburg and the Orangeburg Downtown Revitalization Association were awarded the 2013 Main Street South Carolina Outstanding Public Private Partnership Award at the Municipal Association's 73rd Annual Meeting on July 20. They were nominated by Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association. Main Street South Carolina is a program of the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
The award recognizes a public/private partnership that has resulted in successful achievements for both and clearly demonstrates a cooperative spirit and long-term commitment to the partnership.
Accessible and convenient parking is a critical component for the success of downtown businesses. Many shoppers found parking on Main Street in downtown Orangeburg a frustrating experience.
Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association and the City of Orangeburg tackled this challenge head on. They set out to create off-street, public parking convenient to both shoppers and patrons of the nearby Stevenson Auditorium.
The area identified for the parking lot was comprised of numerous land parcels with separate property owners. DORA purchased two of the large parcels and contacted owners of several additional parcels. Four property owners donated their smaller parcels. With an understanding it would develop the space into the needed parking lot, DORA gave the parcels to the City.
City workers ensured the necessary infrastructure was in place to allow the area to accommodate street dances and other outdoor events. They moved the utilities underground and installed landscaping and decorative lighting.
"DORA and the City of Orangeburg recognized a problem and worked together in partnership with design assistance from Main Street South Carolina to solve it. Their hard work and determination have added that kind of vibrancy to downtown Orangeburg," said Beppie LeGrand, Main Street SC manager.
Main Street South Carolina empowers residents, business owners and local officials with the knowledge, skills, tools and organizational structure necessary to revitalize their downtowns, neighborhood commercial districts and cities/towns into vibrant centers of commerce and community.
